Why is LUBA white? We asked ourselves the same question.

The first answer is simple:

because it looks good.

Very good, actually.

For years, the robotic mower world was dominated by green, grey, black and orange.

Then LUBA arrived.

White.

Clean.

Different.

Almost closer to a design object than to a piece of garden machinery.

At first, that is exactly how we looked at it.

As a design choice.

But working every day with robots, housings, materials and accessories eventually led us to a very simple question:

does that white surface really make a difference under direct sunlight?

So we started measuring.

Something we all know, but rarely measure

Leave a black surface and a white one in the summer sun.

After a while, you can feel the difference with your hand.

The principle is simple.

A dark surface generally absorbs a larger share of solar energy.

A light surface tends to reflect more of it.

Without formulas:

if you absorb less energy, you heat up less.

Nothing revolutionary so far.

It becomes interesting when you apply the same principle to a machine that can spend hour after hour outdoors.

A robot is not simply sitting in the sun

A lot is happening inside a modern robotic mower.

Motors are working.

Batteries are working.

Electronic boards are working.

Sensors are working.

Navigation systems are working.

Control systems are working.

All of them generate or have to manage heat in one way or another.

If the outer body is also being heated by the sun for hours, the machine has to deal with both internal heat and heat coming from outside.

That is where an apparently aesthetic detail starts becoming technically interesting.

Then we picked up the instruments

Out of curiosity, we carried out comparative measurements under real exposure conditions.

The result surprised us.

Under certain conditions, we measured surface temperature differences of up to approximately 20°C between surfaces behaving differently under solar radiation.

Twenty degrees.

That is not insignificant.

Of course, this does not mean that every white surface will always be 20°C cooler.

Many factors affect the result:

  • air temperature;
  • solar intensity;
  • wind;
  • material;
  • surface finish;
  • angle of exposure;
  • time in the sun.

But one thing becomes clear:

colour is not always just colour.

White does not cool the robot

This is worth saying clearly.

White does not “cool” the robot.

It does not create cold.

There is no magic involved.

It does something much simpler:

it can help prevent part of the sun's energy from being absorbed by the surface in the first place.

For a machine that already has to manage the heat generated by its own components, that makes physical sense.

The less unnecessary heat arrives from outside, the less heat there is to manage overall.

Design or function?

This is the part we really like.

Sometimes a product decision begins because it looks good.

Then you discover that it also works well.

Other times it starts as a functional decision and ends up looking good too.

That is one of the most interesting things about industrial design.

A curve can help water run off.

An opening can improve airflow.

A material can reflect heat more effectively.

A colour can change how a surface behaves under sunlight.

That is where aesthetics and engineering start to overlap.

So did Mammotion choose white for this reason?

We do not know.

And we do not want to invent an answer.

Mammotion may have chosen white for design, product identity, recognisability, technical reasons, or a combination of these.

Only the people who designed the robot can really answer that.

We can only say what we observed.

Under direct sunlight, the white surface behaves in an interesting way.

After measuring it, we started looking at that bodywork differently.

Charging deserves attention too

There is another moment when heat becomes particularly interesting.

When the robot stops mowing and returns to its charging station.

The cutting stops, but the battery and charging electronics are still working.

If the robot is also left in direct sunlight, several thermal factors are added together.

So, where possible, it makes sense to avoid unnecessary exposure during the hottest hours.

Not because the robot is not designed for outdoor use.

Simply because:

if we can avoid unnecessary heat, all the better.

So what did that white colour teach us?

That it is still worth being curious.

Look at a product.

Ask a question.

Pick up an instrument.

Measure.

And sometimes discover that a detail that looked purely aesthetic actually had something more to say.

LUBA is white.

It looks good.

It is distinctive.

And under the sun, that white surface shows some very interesting physical behaviour.

For people like us who spend their days designing things around robotic mowers, that is a small lesson we like a lot.

Sometimes the most interesting design is the design you truly understand only after measuring it.
